A dental crown is a tooth-shaped appliance that is placed at the site of a lost tooth or over a damaged tooth as a way of restoring its function and appearance. There are many applications for dental crowns, including:
- Protecting weakened or damaged teeth
- Root canal treatment
- Improving the function of a tooth
- Making adjustments in appearance
- Fixing misshapen teeth
When a patient receives a dental crown, we start by shaving off some of the enamel of the tooth that is designated for treatment. This helps to make space for the dental crown that will be applied. Once the tooth is ready, we will take impressions, and the information will be forwarded to a dental laboratory where a custom dental crown will be built. To protect the patient’s tooth, we will apply a temporary restoration in the meantime.
During the patient’s follow-up visit, the temporary restoration will be removed, and the dental crown will be applied and secured using a dental adhesive. We will make sure that the new crown is secure before providing the patient with important instructions on how to care for their dental crown.
Also called partial dentures, dental bridges are provided for patients who are missing multiple teeth. A dental bridge is made up of natural-looking prosthetic teeth that are supported by the original teeth that are still remaining. Depending on the type, a dental bridge can be removable or permanently fixed inside the mouth.
Fixed bridges are kept securely in place using one of two methods. The bridge can either be directly bonded to the adjacent supporting teeth, or it can be applied on top supporting structures (implants). Removable bridges utilize metal clasps or precision attachments to remain in place. These securing devices keep removable bridges stable, even when the user is talking or eating. Although they are kept steady when needed, removable bridges can be easily taken out at any time for cleaning purposes.
