In certain cases, it may be necessary to extract a tooth from a patient’s mouth. This can occur for many reasons, including severe tooth decay, irreparable damage, advanced gum disease, poor tooth positioning and pre-orthodontic treatment. When tooth extractions are conducted at ProSmiles Dental, our goal is to ensure that the process is as easy and pain-free as possible so that the patient can focus on improving their oral health after the procedure.
The first step when conducting a tooth extraction is to treat the tooth and its surrounding area with a local anesthetic. This is done to numb the tooth, jawbone, and gums so that the patient experiences less pain during the process.
Once the tooth has been extracted, the top priority is initiating the healing process as quickly as possible. This is done by having a blood clot develop at the site of the extraction. To accomplish this, the patient is instructed to bite down on a gauze pad for 30 to 45 minutes. After the blood clot has formed, the patient should be extremely careful not to disturb it in any way. This means avoiding using a straw, rinsing vigorously, smoking, consuming drugs or alcohol and partaking in intense exercise for at least 24 hours after the procedure.
It is likely that the patient will experience some mild to moderate pain at the site of the extraction once the anesthesia wears off. Over-the-counter painkillers can typically address this. Patients should also use an icepack on their outer cheek at the site of the extraction as a way of reducing any swelling that occurs. In most cases, patients can resume their normal brushing and flossing practices just 24 hours after the procedure. Should the patient experience intense pain or excessive bleeding after the process, they should contact our office immediately.
ProSmiles Dental also provides wisdom teeth removals for patients who require the procedure. Wisdom teeth, also known as a person’s third molars, usually develop when a person is in their late teens or early twenties. They are almost always removed due to the limited amount of available inside the mouth.
