Patients who want to immediately improve their smiles and correct noticeable dental flaws often opt to receive veneers as a cosmetic treatment option. Veneers consist of thin, wafer-like shells that are applied over the surface of a person’s teeth. The process of installing a set of veneers is quick and easy, and the results can be seen immediately after they are applied.
Veneers provide a wide variety of dental applications, including:
- Adjusting the color of teeth
- Correcting misshapen and crooked teeth
- Repairing damaged or chipped teeth
- Altering the size of teeth
With their ultra-thin design and carefully-considered coloring, veneers are almost invisible to others, providing the appearance of healthy, white tooth enamel. They are built using stain-resistant materials, preventing them from becoming discolored due to the use of tobacco products or the consumption of beverages such as coffee and wine. A set of veneers that has been cared for properly should last for up to ten years. ProSmiles Dental provides patients with options for both porcelain and composite materials. These materials both perform exceptionally well in enhancing the appearance of a person’s teeth, while still looking completely natural.
Since veneers are custom built using impressions of a patient’s teeth, two visits to our practice are required to receive a set of veneers. During the first visit, the patient’s teeth will be prepared for treatment, and impressions of their teeth will be taken. The application of the veneers will take place when the patient returns for their second visit.
When providing a patient with a set of veneers, the first step is to shave some of the enamel off of the patient’s teeth that are designated for treatment. This allows the new veneers to fit properly. At this point, impressions of the teeth are taken, and a specific coloring for the veneers is determined. This information is then forwarded to a dental laboratory, where the patient’s veneers will be built. Because the patient’s teeth are vulnerable at this time, a temporary restoration designed to protect the teeth will be applied.
The patient’s follow-up visit will take place once their veneers are ready to be installed. The patient will have their temporary restoration removed, and their teeth will be thoroughly cleaned. To help the veneers bond properly, any tooth that is set for treatment will have its surface roughened using etching gel. When the teeth are ready, the veneers will be applied and then secured using a dental adhesive. Once it is ensured that the veneers are held nicely in place, the patient will be provided with important instructions on how to care for their new veneers.
